Kids inspired by Bob Evans' OPS at Boston's Museum of Science

"We chose Bob Evans' fins for the exhibit not only because they fit the criteria and they are functional, but because they are beautiful."

Boston, Massachusetts - Bob Evans' new Force Fin, OPS, short for oscillating propulsion system, is on exhibit at the Museum of Science, Boston, Massachusetts. The fins are part of an exhibit called "Inspired by Nature", which includes objects for which their designers used their observations of natural form for inspiration.

According to Carolyn Kirdahy, Curator of Collections for the Museum of Science, "We chose Bob Evans' fins for the exhibit not only because they fit the criteria and they are functional, but because they are beautiful. So many kids are inspired by the fin. They all want to try it on and ask how it is Bob came up with the design."

In a recent inteview by Professor Harry Wirth of the American Design Network, Bob Evans explained the process of developing his OPS, "I was watching water wicking on leaves. I wonder if I make a fin like a pointed leaf---then what would happen? I see that tadpoles have fins such as this. In most other fins, much of the water goes off to the sides, and they do not focus the water to the rear of the fin. From these observations I created the Ops Fin..." Like all of Bob Evans' Force Fins, the OPS performs as beautifully as it looks. Water travels to the trailing tip just as rain does when wicking off a tropical leaf.

The OPS will be on exhibit within the Natural Mysteries Collection of the Museum of Science through the Summer of 2005.
